When is it Time to Change Out Window Treatments?

Blinds and Shades

Some people like to update their interior design frequently to keep up with changing trends.  If you’re not made of money, though, you’ve probably taken a more frugal approach to décor.  Still, you don’t want to suffer window coverings that don’t work and/or make your home interior feel hopelessly outdated.  Here are a few signs it might be time to change out your window treatments.

When You Move

There are some window coverings that might transition well to a new location, such as voluminous drapes or blinds or shades that are cut for standard window sizes.  Of course, you’ll want to measure first to ensure a perfect fit, but if everything works out, you may be able to take certain window treatments with you when you move to a new home.

That said, it could be more trouble than it’s worth.  While installing drapes is relatively easy, actually removing blinds, shades, or shutters is sure to be a pain, especially for items like vertical blinds on a track.  Then there’s the potential hassles of fitting them into window frames at your new place.  If window treatments are custom, or the windows in your new home aren’t standard sizes, you’re pretty much out of luck.

Plus, do you really want your dusty, faded, outdated window treatments dictating the décor in your new home?  Moving is a great time to upgrade to window coverings that will best suit your needs and display timely interior design in your new home.

When You Redecorate

Any time you undertake renovations or interior redecorating, you need to consider the relative suitability of every element in your design.  Whether you’re adding new flooring and painting walls, you’ve decided to purchase new furnishings, or it’s a complete gutting, your current window treatments simply may not complement your new living spaces, in which case adding upgrades to your remodeling to-do list is wise.

When They’re Too Damaged to Repair

A broken pull cord on your blinds, shades, or drapes isn’t the end of the world.  In some cases, these can be mended or replaced at less expense that purchasing a new window treatment.  However, when there’s so much damage that window coverings are beyond repair, they’re virtually non-functional, and they compromise the aesthetic of your décor, it’s definitely time for an upgrade.

Your House Resembles a Time Capsule

When friends and neighbors politely comment on your “retro” décor, it may indeed be time to update your drapes and chuck the well-worn couch from your college days (or at least have it reupholstered).  Interior decorators recommend updating window treatments every 7-8 years, or as design trends change enough that your window coverings become noticeably outdated.

If you have classic, durable shutters, this may not be necessary.  The same is true if you’ve chosen neutral window treatments in traditional styles and you’ve taken pains to keep them clean and in good repair.  However, when window treatments start to fall apart or look worn, dilapidated, and damaged, you know it’s time to find suitable replacements.
